Creating Eyebrows for BJDs (Part I)

When it comes to adding eyebrows to the 3D surface of a BJD sculpt there are many things to consider. It may seem overwhelming at first, but there are guides on the blank face that can help you start from scratch without using something like a stencil. Now, you can place an eyebrow anywhere (or not have any) on a BJD. However, this tutorial will be based on how I place eyebrows on a sculpt to get a certain mood, realism, or presence. You can use this tutorial as a guide, but it's never wrong to break some rules and experiment.

Part 1 - References

You must consider the real human face. Eyebrows are not symmetrical at all, but they do seem to be contained within a certain area. It is good to look at peoples faces as references and try copying them on paper as practice. Even if you can't draw you can even trace over an image of a persons face to help you understand the proportions. You normally cannot look at a dolls face and just know where the eyebrows go to get a certain look without consulting references.

You should also study a doll with their face blank. The 3D sculpt can give you little hints as where to place an eyebrow. Then you may be able to almost envision the eyebrow appearing on the face before you even start. Most of the time I find that the sculpts tell you how their eyebrows should be. This can be wonderful and bad at the same time. It does help with placement, but may also limit the emotion a certain sculpt can project without it looking strange. Certain sculpts will have pronounced eyebrow ridges or bumps that may restrict your placement to a certain spot. Masculine sculpts usually have this ridge, but not always.

If the eyebrows were placed off the ridge it would look a little strange. Take my first faceup for example. The original (left) looks a bit odd like his eyebrows are going to float off his face. They look more convincing in the edited version (right) because they were placed using the sculpts ridge (and other points) as a reference.

Can you see where this Supia Hael's eyebrows should end up?

Your first hint is the ridge that can be found by using the dark shadows on the upper inside of the eyes, on either side of the nose bridge. Her eyebrows will be in close proximity to this shadow, whether it be slightly above or completely covering it. When looking at these shadows it seems like she already has eyebrows. That's what I use as a guide when brushing on the first layer, or base, for the eyebrows.

With a closer look, I can show you another guide that helps me not only place eyebrows, but also express a certain emotion.
The black line shows where an eyebrow should start. You usually don't want to go past this line, unless you'd like a more uni-brow look.
The red dotted line is the center mark where you will usually first place your brush when starting an eyebrow. This line splits the eyebrow into the expression giving inner area and the style giving outer area.
The blue line represents this "styling" outer area. You can have the eyebrow do mostly anything in this area, including not having anything at all. It can have a high arch, low arch, be straight, dotted, swirl, anything!

The yellow, green, and orange lines represent the "expressive" area.
Placing the beginning of the eyebrow;
Following the yellow line will give more of a sad, upset, or worried expression.
Following the green line will have a neutral, content, or relaxed expression.
Following the orange line will show an angered, serious, or mean expression.

Keep in mind however, these three different emotions (neutral, sad, and angry) do not solely rely on the eyebrow position to be expressed. One must also consider the rest of the sculpts feature, especially the mouth, to successfully express a certain emotion on the sculpt.

Getting things done, a wonderful thing.

I completed karleecakes' commission and also had time to put a face-up on my Supia Hael. I am very pleased with both. I'm glad I could finally get these two very important things finished. It had me thinking that I probably won't ever stop doing this. I am taking a break from commissions, but will be working on my own projects.

Speaking of projects, I promise an eyebrow tutorial as my next post. It will show how I begin eyebrows and a bit of information on how I got to understanding how to place them on in the first place. I hope to do more tutorials, so keep suggestions coming.

Some changes to mention.

I recently decided to delete my facebook and so the Meggilu facebook page went with it. I will be keeping everyone updated through Twitter and the blog. As for the blog, I will be doing in-depth BJD tutorials since I am taking a break from new face-up commissions. I would love some input on what the first tutorial should be, so please feel free to leave a suggestion in the comments. They will be mostly text and photo for now since I do not have the best video equipment.

Also, I decided to finally start my Monster Breath project which will be housed on it's own tumblr blog (Warning: it's full of things people may find gross). It will also feature my favorites from horror and monster culture. If it sparks your interest feel free to follow me. Once I have some completed work I will also place them on the Monster Breath Etsy store.

Lastly, I am going to be selling my Supia Hael and LW Mihael. I'm waiting to see if I will be able to work on their face-ups first before I sell them. Right now I must continue with commissions.

She's a "Scrape", half "Square" half "Drape".

I've been incredibly busy since school started. Right off the bat I had art projects that took up a lot of my energy and time. My illustration professor did this purposefully and he wanted to see what level we were at in production. We had two weeks to create drafts and sketches and then a final piece. Once I was working on my final piece I couldn't stop. I was so immersed into working on it, almost to the point of calling it an addiction. I've never really gotten that way about drawing before. I was always afraid to draw. I actually thought I was a horrible drawer. I realize now I was just inexperienced, unfocused, and insecure. Good to know some things are changing as I'm aging.

The project was to illustrate something you remember from your childhood. I chose a nightmare I had when I was a kid about my brother. It stuck with me because, well, let me just show you...

Now that I have some down time I'm going to work on dolls. Finally.
Random hair update for today. The purple is almost exactly the color I want it, and I'm definitely having fun with it. Also random information is that I realized I have a free gym at my college. I almost joined a gym. Sometimes I don't know where my head is at. So psyched.

A very plain Sunday, and that's alright.

Another commission finished and I'm moving onto more. I'm starting to get used to my new paint brush and can control how thin the strokes are painted. Thin strokes are key for faceups, and it's torture when you place the brush on the face, lose control of the brush, and sweep a huge, thick line right across an eyebrow. Control is the goal. Just have to keep working on more faces!

The rest of the day will be dedicated to Illustration homework, watching some football, fashioning a decent  résumé, and bleaching my roots.

Sounds of January.

I started the spring semester this past Tuesday, and I must say I'm pretty excited to be an art major. Phew, I chose correctly, and I'm pretty much dead sure about that. Took me a 5 year break to be certain, but onward now! I wanted to get completed as quickly as possible, so I'm looking into either adding another class to my schedule, or taking on an internship and taking classes in the summer. This means I'm looking to keep myself busy with life stuff leaving doll stuff by the road side. Just some doll stuff, not everything. My goal for the next two years is to have a car, job, and move the heck out and into my own place. Preferably with my friend Dayna. Wish me luck!

I've been submersing myself in music. I found some new stuff, and rediscovered some songs I forgot about. I'd like to share them with you! Enjoy.

Long awaited trips.

I was finally able to take a trip to Mitsuwa this passed Tuesday with my friends from college. I hadn't been there in quite some time, so it was lovely to go back and also hang out with some of my favorite people. Ahh and the ramen and dessert was the best part.

Right now I'm getting ready to paint Svgjen and Cha1n's commissions. Then I have to get ready for my train ride tomorrow. :)
